How did you become involved in the smart building industry?
My journey into the smart building industry is deeply rooted in my background as a qualified electrician. From the early days of my career, I was immersed in the world of building operations, which laid a solid foundation for my future endeavours.
As I worked in various buildings, I developed a growing fascination with the potential of technology to revolutionize how we manage and operate buildings.
For nearly two decades, I honed my skills and knowledge in building operations. I witnessed firsthand the inefficiencies in traditional building management systems and recognized the need for smarter solutions.
About three years ago, I made a pivotal decision to transition full-time into the realm of technological solutions for buildings. This move allowed me to fully immerse myself in the exciting and rapidly evolving world of smart buildings.
The fact that my work contributes to creating more sustainable urban environments has been a significant driving force in my career shift. It's incredibly fulfilling to know that the solutions we implement are not just improving building performance but are also "doing good" for our planet.
As I delve deeper into this "crazy world of smart buildings," I find myself more passionate and committed than ever. The rapid pace of innovation, the potential for positive environmental impact, and the opportunity to shape the future of urban spaces continue to inspire me every day.
This journey from a hands-on electrician to a tech solutions specialist in smart buildings has been both rewarding and enlightening. It's a path that has allowed me to combine my practical experience with my aspirations for a more sustainable future, and I'm excited to see where this dynamic industry will lead next.
What excites you about smart buildings Industry?
What truly captivated me about this industry was its dual value proposition. On one hand, smart building technologies offer tremendous potential for optimizing operations, reducing costs, and enhancing user experiences. On the other hand, and perhaps more importantly to me, these innovations play a crucial role in reducing our environmental impact.
The smart building industry, with its blend of cutting-edge technology and environmental consciousness, presents an exciting challenge. It's a field that constantly pushes the boundaries of what's possible, requiring continuous learning and adaptation.
Are there any technologies we should be aware of?
In today's rapidly evolving and fiercely competitive tech market, it can be challenging to discern "what good looks like" and determine which solutions are most appropriate for each client's unique needs. The sheer volume of options available can be overwhelming, making it essential to approach the selection process with a strategic mindset.
With the net zero deadline looming on the horizon, my strongest recommendation to clients is to take action immediately. Delaying engagement with sustainable technologies could result in significant challenges down the line, both in terms of compliance and market competitiveness. As a wise colleague once told me, "The tech train has left the station, and if you're not on board, you'll be left behind." This analogy perfectly encapsulates the urgency of embracing technological advancements in the property sector.
To make informed decisions, it's crucial to arm yourself with comprehensive knowledge. This involves:
- Conducting thorough research on available technologies and their applications in the property sector.
- Analysing case studies of successful implementations in similar properties or organizations.
- Assessing the long-term benefits and potential return on investment for various solutions.
- Considering the scalability and future-proofing aspects of the technologies under consideration.
Moreover, don't hesitate to reach out to industry leaders and product experts. Their insights can be invaluable in navigating the complex landscape of property technology.
Remember that the right technology solution should not only address current needs but also align with your long-term strategic goals. It should enhance operational efficiency, improve tenant experiences, and contribute to sustainability objectives.
Lastly, consider the implementation process and change management required when adopting new technologies. Ensure that your team is prepared for the transition and that you have a solid plan for training and integration.
By taking a proactive and well-informed approach to technology adoption, property owners and managers can position themselves at the forefront of innovation, driving efficiency, sustainability, and value in their portfolios.
What are the benefits of a smart building?
The benefits of a Technology Smart Building are numerous and far-reaching, impacting various aspects of building management, tenant experience, and overall property value.
My Top 10 are:
- Energy Efficiency and Sustainability
- Cost Savings
- Enhanced Occupant Comfort and Productivity
- Improved Safety and Security
- Data-Driven Decision Making
- Improved Asset Value
- Enhanced Tenant Experience
- Operational Efficiency
- Reporting and Compliance
- Adaptability and Flexibility
By implementing these smart building technologies, property owners and managers can create more efficient, sustainable, and attractive spaces that meet the evolving needs of modern tenants while also improving their own operational efficiency and bottom line. The initial investment in smart building technology often pays off through long-term savings, increased property value, and improved tenant satisfaction and retention.
Who has been the biggest influence in your career?
Wow, talking about putting me on the spot. This is a challenging question for a couple of reasons:
(a) I'd risk unintentionally overlooking someone important if I tried to list everyone, and (b) There have been numerous influential figures throughout my career.
Reflecting on my professional journey, I realize that in every position I've held, there's always been a leader or influential figure who made a significant impact during that particular phase. It's fascinating to see how these influences have constantly evolved, shaping my growth and perspective over time.
However, if I had to single out one person who's been a constant source of inspiration and guidance, it would undoubtedly be my father. He's the one who instilled in me a proper work ethic from the very beginning of my career. To this day, he remains someone I deeply respect and continually look up to.
One piece of wisdom my dad still shares with me resonates deeply: "If you finish your day's work knowing you did your absolute best, nothing else matters." This philosophy has become a cornerstone of my professional approach, encouraging me to always give my all, regardless of the task at hand.
In the spirit of continuous growth, I'm always open to learning from those around me and the latest would be from a very dear friend of mine Dr Matthew Marson (JLL’s Advisory MD for EMEA) who wrote a book called “The Smart Building Advantage” , if you have not got a copy of this book I urge you to get your hands on one.
What are the best/worst thing about your job?
Best part: The opportunity to work with cutting-edge technology that optimizes building operations, improves energy efficiency, and enhances occupant comfort. This field is at the forefront of sustainable urban development and can have a significant positive impact on the environment and people's daily lives.
Worst part: The complexity and rapid evolution of the technology can be challenging to keep up with. There may also be concerns about data privacy and security, as smart building systems collect and process large amounts of information. Additionally, there could be resistance from building occupants or traditional Building Management who are sceptical of AI-driven systems.
What advice would you give to someone starting out in the industry?
Taking no risks will be your biggest risk. Take it from me, it’s so easy to fall into a comfort zone and the longer you’re in it the harder it’ll get to move out.
Where would you most like to live?
Born in South Africa but having lived most of my life now in the UK; home will always be South Africa. Ideally, I’d like to have a balance where I can live / work 6 months per year from each country and never have to face a winter period (that is how I will know I have ‘made it’ in life😊).
How do you relax?
Weekends and off time are spent with my lovely wife Mabel and our 2 Western Highland Terriers, Bo and Billie. I love a round of golf, deep sea fishing and cooking. I do love cooking, and the best cooking is on an open fire or a “Braai” as we refer to in South Africa.
What sports team do you support?
Without stating the obvious, The Springboks (Rugby Team) and of course England when they’re not playing against South Africa.
What is your desert island mix?
It’s got to be a mixed tape (I know I’m giving my age away) but my taste in music is vast, from Country to Alternative to Afrikaans, and off course the legends such as Cat Stevens, Nat King Cole and Neil Diamond.
What’s your ideal holiday?
My dream holiday is where I don’t have to plan anything – hence why me and my wife like to book holiday cruises, as I am okay (whilst on holiday) being in the passenger seat and winging it.
These types of holidays usually involve some warm weather, a calm beach, good food and good vibes! Being able to unplug and reset is usually the goal of my vacation.
