How did you become involved in the Smart Buildings industry?
I became involved through a focus on digital infrastructure and network resilience. As buildings became more connected, the need for secure, always-on networks grew. That intersection between IT and operational technology (OT) is where I found my niche.
What excites you about the Smart Buildings industry?
The pace of innovation. Smart buildings are no longer just about automation- they’re about creating environments that are efficient, secure, and responsive to the needs of occupants. Seeing technology directly improve how people experience and interact with spaces is incredibly rewarding.
Are there any particular technologies that we should be aware of?
Yes. Operational video wall technology is transforming how building operators visualise and manage systems. AI-driven HVAC optimisation, IoT-based predictive maintenance, and digital twins are also shaping the future. Integration across platforms is key.
What services does your organisation offer?
Trust Systems provide resilient network design, architecture consultancy, and implementation for smart buildings. Our solutions support EMS, BMS, and other critical systems, ensuring uptime, security, and scalability. We also offer visualisation tools like operational video walls to unify data and improve decision-making.
What are the benefits of a smart building?
Smart buildings offer improved energy efficiency, better occupant comfort, enhanced security, and reduced operational costs. They also provide real-time data that helps facilities teams make informed decisions and respond quickly to issues.
Who has been the biggest influence in your career?
There have been several people that have influenced the direction of my career but one stands out above the rest, it was the CTO of a previous employer who taught me that above all else, the most important part of your business is the people. If you look after your people, they will perform at their best. At Trust my team come first.
What is the question you are most often asked in your business life?
Do you mean other than “Can you fix my Wi-Fi?” I don’t think there is one particular question I’m asked frequently but I was asked recently about how to motivate technical teams into thinking outside the box, I strongly believe that challenging people’s ideas (in a positive way) makes them think more deeply about the problem they are trying to solve. Don’t be afraid to ask the difficult questions!
What are the best/worst things about your job?
The best and worst thing about my job is keeping up with the technology. The wider the field you work in, the more difficult it can be to stay ahead of the game but, the excitement of finding a new product/device/gadget to help solve a problem makes it all worthwhile. It’s a double-edged sword.
What advice would you give to someone starting out in the industry? Technology can be a stressful and consuming industry, find something that piques your interest and get good at it but, don’t let it become your life, people put a lot of pressure on themselves to keep up with ever-changing technology available to us so try and maintain a healthy work-life balance.
What living person do you admire and why?
Dick van Dyke – His life is a testament to why you shouldn’t let anything get in the way of doing what you enjoy. At 99 years old he is still dancing, going to the gym and generally being a nuisance. What a legend.
Where would you most like to live?
Kenya – It’s a beautiful country, full of beautiful people.
What is your favourite book?
Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince
How do you relax?
I work in a fast-paced, technology first industry where staying connected is a 24/7 job; so relaxing is a luxury. But a nice Port and a selection of good cheese helps..
What sports team do you support?
Leicester Tigers Rugby Club
What is your desert island disk?
Jagged Little Pill – Allanis Morrissette
What is your ideal holiday?
I like an active holiday, I can’t sit by a pool, anywhere I can explore, experience different cultures, try new food or try a new language is fine by me.
