British Gas has once again invested in smart building.

The company paid about $100 million for an intelligent buildings start-up company based in London called AlertMe.

Founded in 2006, AlertMe has developed a suite of home energy management products for data analytics, remote monitoring and automation.

Home energy management start-up companies accounted for about $562 million of venture capital investments between 2000 to 2015, according to Lux Research.

In 2014, British Gas inked a $30 million deal with Vancouver-based Pulse Energy. Pulse, which provides energy benchmarking for commercial buildings, was subsequently acquired by EnerNOC ENOC -1.17%.
