Carrier Solutions UK was selected to provide a rapid HVAC solution for Chichester College, where an ageing chiller system had reached the end of its operational life. Working alongside the installing contractor, Rossair, the team delivered a fast turnaround replacement with the Toshiba Universal Smart X (USX) high-capacity air-source heat pump. Carrier Solutions UK Ltd (formerly Toshiba Carrier UK Ltd) is a part of Carrier Global Corporation (NYSE: CARR), global leader in intelligent climate and energy solutions.

With minimal disruption to term-time operations a priority, Carrier Solutions UK was able to supply the required USX unit from stock within 48 hours, a significant advantage compared with typical lead times of eight to ten weeks for equipment of this capacity.

The installation required a 140kW capacity unit to meet the demands of the college’s E Block. Key included energy efficiency, quiet operation, compatibility with existing pumps, and seamless integration with the building management system (BMS). In addition, due to the campus’s coastal location, the system received an anti-corrosion treatment from specialist contractor Bronz-Glow UK to ensure long-term durability.

Positioned externally on a concrete base at ground level, the USX unit was installed using a crane. Careful planning overcame access challenges posed by narrow roads, ensuring on-time delivery and smooth installation. Rossair managed the mechanical works, while a third-party controls team handled BMS integration. Carrier Solutions UK’s commissioning and controls engineers provided technical support throughout, with two weeks of monitored performance checks following commissioning.

“The Chichester College project highlighted the real advantage of being able to supply from stock,” said Dave McSherry, Sales Director, UK&I, Carrier Solutions UK. “With Carrier able to supply the USX unit immediately, Rossair delivering a high-quality installation and coordinated commissioning support, we were able to meet urgent requirements and the college received a reliable, future-ready system without delay.”

“We were impressed with how quickly the new system was delivered and installed,” said Kevin White, Estates Manager at Chichester College. “The college is committed to sustainability, energy efficiency and responsible resource management and the Toshiba USX Edge supports our operational efficiency and ongoing efforts to reduce carbon emissions and our environmental impact.”

The Toshiba USX high-capacity heat pump now delivers 140kW of reliable cooling for E Block, aligned with the building’s operational schedule of nine hours a day, 22 days per month. Integration with the BMS enables efficient operation and oversight by the college’s maintenance team.

Analysis of electricity consumption over two four-month periods before and after installation (from 1 July 2024 to 1 July 2025) showed a reduction of 10,882 kWh per month during active hours, equating to an approximate saving of 43,528 kWh over the four-month testing period, with a cost saving of approximately £8,700.
