Trojan Lighting, in collaboration with technology partners Mymesh and Tridonic, has successfully resolved a critical lighting issue at Lewisham Hospital without the need for physical intervention, demonstrating the power of smart building technology in action.

The hospital had recently upgraded lighting in its operating theatres with a range of Trojan’s intelligent luminaires. During commissioning, it was discovered that one of the fittings had been supplied with incorrect driver settings, resulting in a significant reduction in light output, a serious concern in a clinical environment.

With scheduled operations imminent, the conventional fix would have required a full weekend call-out. This would have involved opening the sealed theatre ceiling, deploying electricians and decorators, a hospital representative on site, and a follow-up deep clean, all of which would have been costly, time-consuming, and potentially disruptive to patient care.

Instead, Trojan explored whether the issue could be addressed remotely. Working closely with the technical teams at Mymesh and Tridonic, the team isolated the necessary DALI instructions and developed a method to send a firmware update wirelessly via the mesh network. The following morning, the hospital’s facilities team cycled the power to the affected fixtures - and the fix worked. The light output tripled, and the theatre remained untouched.

“This is a clear example of what can be achieved when you combine smart technology with collaborative problem-solving,” said Anthony Barrow, MD for Trojan Lighting. “We avoided disruption to patient care, saved time and cost, and delivered the result our client needed.”
