Revalidation of Competence in Building Controls & Automation
Industry Consultation: Revalidation of Competence in Building Controls & Automation
The Building Controls Industry Association has been tasked with developing a full competency framework for Building Controls and Automation and specifically - a system of revalidation.
The primary role currently being focused on in the competency framework is the BEMS Controls Engineer role.
BCIA have launched this consultation to hear views from a broad representation of the Building Controls and Automation sector, so please do participate.
The Grenfell Tower tragedy (2017) and the Building Safety Act (2022) have driven major changes in regulation and accountability.
“Grandfather Rights” are being phased out, shifting the emphasis from years of experience to verified skills and qualifications.
BCIA have worked with the sector to develop the framework so far, including the introduction of the Level 4 BEMS Controls Engineer Apprenticeship and Experienced Worker Assessment whichalready support career pathways.
There is still a crucial piece missing: revalidation of competence - evidence that individuals maintain and update their skills over time.
How You Can Help Shape The Future
BCIA are consulting the industry to answer key questions:
What form should revalidation take?
How should competence be assessed?
How often should revalidation be required in light of rapid technological change?
Your views will shape the forms of revalidation we put forward.
